Your first move decides a lot

How the quiz picks your openings

Every opening on CastleEarly is rated for how attacking, solid or strategic it is, how much theory it needs, whether it leads to open or closed positions, and how experienced you should be to enjoy it. Your answers are matched against those ratings.

As Black you need two answers: one against 1.e4 and one against 1.d4, because White decides the first move. As White, one opening is enough to start with.

Tips for choosing

  • Pick one and stick with it for a few months. You learn more from 50 games in one opening than 5 games in ten.
  • Understand the ideas, not just the moves. Every lesson has key ideas, plans and a quiz.
  • Not sure yet? The Italian Game (White) and the Caro-Kann (Black) are safe first choices.
