King's Indian Defense: a complete beginner's guide

By HussainUpdated October 29, 20267 min read

The King's Indian Defense lets White build a big pawn center, then attacks it with pieces and pawns. Black fianchettoes the bishop on g7, castles quickly, and often launches a kingside pawn storm. It's a fighting defense that has been played by world champions like Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov.

The main line, move by move

Here is the Classical main line. Step through it, then practice Black's moves.

How the King's Indian works

Black allows White a big center on purpose. Once the center is closed (after White plays d5), the game becomes a race: White attacks on the queenside, Black attacks on the kingside with ...f5, ...f4 and ...g5.

Black's plan

  • Castle quickly behind the g7 bishop.
  • Strike with ...e5 (or ...c5).
  • After d5, play ...Ne7, ...Nd7 or ...Ne8, and ...f5 for a kingside attack.

Against the London System

Many club players use the London System. The King's Indian setup works well against it: develop, castle, and prepare ...e5.

Common beginner mistakes in the King's Indian

  • Waiting too long for ...e5 or ...c5. Without a central strike, White's center just squeezes you.
  • Opening the center when White is better developed. Make sure your pieces are ready first.
  • Losing the race. When the center closes, every tempo matters on both wings.
